I normally don’t do this, but I wanted to share on my blog this week’s Brand Mafia Collective newsletter, because of everything that’s going on the world. Hopefully you find some inspiration from this.
I’m sitting here with a swell of mixed emotions right now. As I am sure many of you are. The world is going through a change. Some are calling it a time of awakening, a time of shedding, a time of healing, a time to reset. Whatever the bigger picture is here – I believe it’s a time to tap into ourselves. To trust that this process is going to bring something bigger & better than we ever could have imagined.
I wanted to call this week “A creative’s love letter”, because I want to take the time to speak to you about creative intention. Not just in your business, but in your life. I think that some bigger questions about who we are as a society are going to be answered when this all ends, but while we are going through it – I think we need to use this time to play with the idea of creativity & use it as a tool to overcome the fear, to find something new within ourselves & to invent new ways of living day to day.
Many times creativity is a little chaotic. It doesn’t always have a straight & a narrow line. Working has a brand stylist means I live day to day in a creative mind space & I can definitely tell you that alot of the times chaos feeds the creativity. Buttttt when we can learn to become intentional with our creativity that’s when big things can happen.
Here’s my letter – I hope you can find something for yourself in it during this time.
This one is for all the mamas out there. In our part of the world school has ended for the year & I never thought it would come to this. I thought maybeeee a couple of weeks. If you are in the same boat I’m sure you can relate when I say that my initial reaction was WTF. I was shocked & so many questions ran through my head. What would she do? Will she advance to the next grade? Will she fall behind? And on and on and on.
But then I realized that while this is just a normal human reaction as a mother I had to stop myself. I needed to look at this situation from the other side. So I started asking- What could we do more of together? How can we connect differently? What can SHE take away from this?
So with some creative intention I have challenged her to explore new things. For example – I want her to watch age appropriate documentaries. She’s 12 1/2 now & understands what is happening in the world right now. I want her to expand, but in a less traditional way of learning. I want her to see through a different lens than what she gets day to day in the classroom.
This time of change, awakening, release, shedding, healing & reset also applies to our children. (This is all just my opinion- take what you want from it) I want to challenge my daughter to experience the vibes that are going to change our world. I want to show her that things happen in life & we can either hide in fear or we can grow from the change & make something new.
Girl – I feel you. It’s crazy out there. It really is. As entrepreneurs we face it all. We get all the shit thrown up in our faces. We know seasons of struggle, days of feeling separated from the world & the constant WTF we whisper to ourselves as we navigate unknown waters. We – on more than one occasion have been up the proverbial “shit creek” without that damn paddle.
Butttt WE- the fiery entrepreneurial girl bosses are the epitome of creative intention. Think about it. We have mastered the trickery of client Zoom calls & sweatpants. It’s the working woman’s mullet. Business on top – party on the bottom. We build tribes, sisterhoods, communities that create relationships so deep – empires are built. We show up everyday to serve our clients & sometimes the only monetary exchange is connection. We challenge the status quo- when we are constantly creating new ways to “get the job done”. ( I know you’ve typed into Google…How to …?) It’s ok. We are a strong community of women that will find new ways to “get the job done” in this time of fear & challenges. We will come out stronger than ever. We will show them you can adapt to hostile situations.
How? By remaining a united community. By keeping the connection strong in a world that is isolating. And continuing to serve in a world where panic has made society selfish.
This is the BIG one. This is for yourself. It doesn’t matter if you are a mama, a fiery girlboss, a sister, a daughter, a friend, a wife. You are a strong woman despite your “roles” in life.
Use creativity to explore the things you never would have before. I am taking this time to learn some new skills I can apply within my business when this clears. I am going to really dig into the commitment of doing more that serves my body (I’m talking workouts) so that I can be a better version of myself. I want to use creative intention to better align my business goals with the execution of those goals. I want to use this time of isolation to read books I’ve been wanting to read forever & to finish putting my home office together.
This time I know is scary for a lot of reasons, but we are here – alive. I am grateful for that. I am grateful for my daughter & my fiery girlboss tribe. For my friends & family. I am grateful to see this shake the world loose from what it was becoming & make it something new.
So whatever part of the world you are in, whatever your role is – know that you have the power to use creative intention to find new ways, connect even though you’re in isolation & write the story that you will tell when they ask about the pandemic of 2020.
I hope you all take care of yourselves in what ever way is best & right for you. There is no one way for everyone.
